Bill Simmons sports guy here, the roster looks to be loaded with guys in their mid 20s. How does the only 30 year old, reigning 6th Man of the Year, Wayman Tisdale fit in? Is he going to stick around and try to be the leader of the team while still providing a scoring spark off the bench?

J2: Glad to see you could make it, Mr. Simmons. Yes, we have made a concerted effort to stock our team with young, talented players. However, veteran leadership is always appreciated, and we hope that Wayman can fill that role from the bench...if necessary. We currently have him penciled in as the backup Center to Duane, and still our primary scoring threat down low.

J2: I'm sure that Mr. Simmons isn't the only one with questions. Are there any others?
Johnny Junior: When is this going to be over? We've been here for what seems like an eternity. I thought you said this was going to be quick?
J2: ...next question please.

1995 Wizards Media Day
Honey turned to her companion and whispered, "Is it dead in here or what?" Reporter Johnny Junior nodded, and looked around to take it all in. It was the exact opposite of last season, the signs had disappeared, along with the many jersey-wearing fans. There were still a solid amount of fans, but they just didn't look as enthusiastic as before. Funny, because he was. Not only did Honey forgive him for canceling last year, but she also asked to come along for this press conference. A smile broke upon his face, just as the General Manager of the Washington Wizards, the young man known as J2, walked out. Johnny noticed that he had a wry grin on his face, as if the subdued atmosphere was more to his liking.
J2: Good afternoon. I'm not going to say much in the way of introductions, as I'm sure that my answers to your questions will sum up our offseason better than any simple statement can. So with that said, I now open the floor for questions.

Hey J2, Wolves generic reporter here. In your trade with the wolves, you got young pieces. How do you see McKie and Williams fitting into your rotation?

Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: In your heart of hearts, do you think this is a team you have now that can finally crack through that ceiling and reach post season play with the roster you currently have after your most recent trade with Minnesota and losing Mark Macon to the Western Conference?

J2: Hello, generic reporter from Minnesota. I imagine things are pretty festive back home. Well, this season is all about evaluating talent. Our goal when trading Sean, Keith, and Tyrone was to get talent that we felt could make a future impact in return. As of now, Aaron & Walt are both pegged in as starters, at the SG and PF slots respectively. Training Camp will influence things somewhat, but we expect good things from both this season.
And Mr. Melon, welcome back to DC. Well, anything is possible. As I looked over the rest of the Eastern conference, I determined that if we all work hard and the team meshes well, we would be in the running for a playoff berth. Despite not having as much sheer talent as last season, we are more balanced, and have emerging talents in Causwell, Horry, and Wesley. Under the leadership of our vet Nick Anderson, this team has potential. It will be up to the players and our coaching staff to see if that potential is fulfilled.

J. Jones from Sac-Bee, what is your teams goals this season? Do you feel your team can make the playoffs in a weaker-than-normal Eastern conference this season, or does a lot depend on training camp and developing your players?

J2: Welcome to DC, Mr. Jones. To be honest, our goal is to develop and evaluate talent. The front office know who we want moving forward, but the players don't know that we know what we know. So this is their chance to impress, to prove that any thoughts of rebuilding are premature, that this team is ready now. Making the playoffs would go a long way towards ensuring their spots for the future. And again, looking at the landscape of the Eastern Conference, competing for a playoff spot is very possible.

You have impressively accumulated a lot of young talent on your team. With a larger number than usual coming off the roster next season, who of those expiring contracts do you expect to really establish as a player for your future that would require you to resign him?

With a larger number than usual coming off the roster next season, who of those expiring contracts do you expect to really establish as a player for your future that would require you to resign him? J2: We're looking for Robert Horry to establish himself as a key player this season. We believe he has all the tools to become a bigger version of Scottie Pippen, but he has struggled to find his place since arriving in DC, despite strong training camps. We're also interested in seeing how Stanley Roberts & Lorenzo Williams develop. Both are promising young posts who each have strong potential in various elements of post play. The hope is that they can combine to form a great 1-2 punch of inside scoring, rebounding, defensive play, and energy off the bench.

Sports Guy Bill Simmons here, with three draft picks in the upcoming loaded draft (albeit two from Western Conference Powers) what's the plan this year? Scout the draft and accumulate more picks? Develop your young talent? Or try to get some veteran leadership to the nation's capital?

J2: Welcome back to DC, Sportsguy. We'd love to acquire more picks and stack the deck in our favor, but that probably won't happen, as the strength of next season's draft is widely known. Teams usually don't part with their 1sts easy, and this season will be even harder to pry draft picks away from others. So, that's not really a priority, though if the opportunity presents itself, it will be considered. As for acquiring veteran leadership, we feel as if we already have a leader in Nick Anderson, who is entering his 5th season. We also feel like David Wesley has the potential to be a strong floor leader. And again, this season is all about developing and evaluating our young talent for the future.

Will Maukie of the Milwaukee Tribune: Do you feel that David Wesley is primed for a breakout season? How important will his role be? Also, speaking as a team with a similar situation of a lot of money tied up in 1 position, will you be actively looking to move one of your centers?

J2: Well, Will, we are expecting David to make strides towards being the next top young PG this season. We'd shown interest in him for quite some time, intrigued by his potential, and were thrilled when we finally acquired him. As for his role, we plan for him to be our floor leader. We have fine shooters, but few distributors, and so we hope to have the ball go through David on every play. To answer your other question, we do not regret giving Duane his contract because it is difficult to acquire quality post help in this league, but the realization that we could enter the salary cap without a playoff berth to show for it has forced us to seek other options. So yes, Duane will be shopped throughout the season.

1996 Press Conference Wizards GM J2 walks up to the podium, calm and collected as usual. The noisy crowd settles down, in anticipation of what he has to say.
J2: Good afternoon, all. As you well know, last season started out on a terrible note, as we were forced to say goodbye to many of our players, such as Mark Macon and Sean Elliott. I'll admit, things did look bad for us, and many within the organization considered tanking as the best option. But, we decided to do as we have always tried to do, and that's compete to the best of our ability. And compete we did! Behind excellent contributions from our players, and an All-Star season from our point guard David Wesley, we took the East by surprise and finished 5th in the East. *J2 pauses as the crowd claps and cheers*
J2: Unfortunately, we went up against the Toronto Raptors, a team assembled by one of the top GMs in this league, and were dismissed in the 1st Round. *The crowd went silent. That series was a painful one, as the Wizards shockingly failed to do what they had done all season long - defend homecourt. Both of their wins in the series came in Toronto, so it wasn't farfetched to think that if the Wizards had been able to hold homecourt advantage, they would've won easily*
J2: We have put that loss behind us, and are now looking forward to a new era, a competitive one. We have retained the services of our core players, and have even added a few additional pieces, like Rex Walters, Gheorghe Muresan, and Lorenzo Williams. From now on, we expect to be in the playoff hunt, and as a reminder of that, our creative & marketing department have designed new alternate jerseys that will be worn at home games from now on. These jerseys are based on our 1970's jerseys, a time when we were not only perennial contenders, but Finals contenders as well. They will remind us of the proud tradition that we once upheld, and aspire to uphold once again. At this time, we shall now present them to you, as well as our 1996-1997 Wizards team.
*A hush comes over the crowd as the room goes dark. All eyes turn to the screen as words began to slowly take form*
Video clips are shown of the Wizards' many failures over the past few seasons.
Pictures of Scottie Pippen holding up a Wizards jersey at the NBA Redraft, Dennis Rodman slouching in a chair at the press conference, Wayman Tisdale dunking, Brent Price draining a 3, Doc Rivers with a steal, etc. flash across the screen.
Marc Macon is shown holding up a Trail Blazers jersey, Chris Childs a Hornets jersey, Stanley Roberts a Pistons jersey, Scottie Pippen with multiple jerseys, Horace Grant against the Wizards in the playoffs, etc.
Various clips are shown of Duane Causwell, Nick Anderson, Aaron McKie, Robert Horry, and David Wesley.
*The crowd rises to their feet and cheers, waiting for the lights to come on so that they can get a look at the Wiz Kids modeling their new jerseys. The picture stays on the screen for a few minutes, and the cheers eventually die down...but then the room goes black again, and the generic promo music cuts off, only to be replaced by...*
*White strobe lights start flashing on and off as the Wizards come out from the back of the room in their new jerseys, all wearing some form of black as well - black jeans, black leather jackets, black bandannas, etc. Robert Horry comes swaggering out last, wearing his jersey backwards
and white-rimmed black shades to go along with his black bandanna. The music keeps playing as they make their way to the stage, where Horry grabs the mic and lightly shoves J2 away. J2 turns and glares at the production intern, who gulps, puts his hands up, and says, "I had nothing to do with this, I swear!"*
(HINT: Leave the music on while you're reading this, it's more fun that way. )
J2: Rob, what's going on? What in the hell do you think you're doing? Horry: Yo man, the first thing you gotta do is tell these people to make some noise if they wanna hear what I gotta say. *The crowd cheers wildly as the rest of the Wizards egg them on* J2: Now I haven't known you for that many years, but for you to join up with the rest of the team and pull something like this kinda makes me sick to my stomach. You've gotta be kidding me. Horry: Well the first thing y'all gotta realize, dawg, is that this right here is the future of Wiz basketball. You can call this the New Wiz Order of basketball dawg. Let me tell you something, this offseason, some billionaire amigo, he wanted to talk turkey with Hollywood Horry. Well this billionaire promised me a guaranteed starting spot, dawg. This billionaire promised me millions of dollars. And this billionaire promised me NBA World Championships. And while that billionaire, his coach, his players, and his entire organization were yapping, I got bored dawg. That's why I agreed to re-sign here, I want this team, these so-called Wiz Kids, these are the men I want as my teammates. We are the new blood of the NBA and not only are we going to take over the league, with Hollywood Horry, the new blood, and the monsters with me, we will destroy everything in our path y'all. I mean look at us! We've got Big Daddy Duane... Horry:...The Giant... Horry: ...Syxx-Foot, Da Little Guy.... Horry: ...Power Forward Pump, Enzo... Horry: ...Slick Daddy, he's Nick, he's Slick, and he's just...toooooooo quuuuuuick... Horry: ...and the B-Team. *The rest of the guys (Rooks, Mayberry, Walters, and McKie) try to strut and show off, but Horry ignores them and continues on*
Horry: As far as I'm concerned, all that crap that you just showed represents the past. For eight years dawg! For eight years, DC held their heads down. The Wiz couldn't do anything right. And the reception we got when we came out, well, you can stick that dawg. It's because of Hollywood Horry that you people are here now. It's because of Syxx-Foot David Wesley that you people are here now. And if it wasn't for all of us, J2 would still be part of a little old sim league in Louisiana. So the way it is now dawg, with Hollywood Horry and the New Wiz Organization of basketball dawg, me and the new blood by my side, what they gonna do when the New Wiz Order runs wild on 'em? What they gonna do? J2: ...All right. We have seen the end of any kind of order and structure at this press conference. I don't know...Any questions? This press conference has gone straight to hell. Let's go, any questions. J2 (under his breath): .......Straight to hell.

J2: Well, since there haven't been any questions yet, I'll take this time to run through some of the moves we've made.
*Horry swaggers back up and moves towards J2 and the mic*
J2 (glaring): Don't you touch me or this mic, I have lawyers.
*Horry slinks back towards his teammates*
J2: ...Ahem. The shooting guard position was a point of emphasis for us this offseason, as that was one of our weaknesses last season. Though we liked what we saw from McKie, we thought that a little insurance couldn't hurt. And, after all of our attempts to move up in the draft failed, and all our targets were taken, we decided to use that 20th pick to trade for a true shooting guard, Rex Walters.
J2: Unfortunately, we also had to give up Chris Childs in the bargain, and we will miss him dearly. His departure left a giant hole at the backup PG position, one that we went into Free Agency determined to fix. After numerous failed bids, we signed Lee Mayberry to play that role. However, we thought we were signing an Andy Griffith, but after TC, it was revealed that we had, in fact, signed a Gomer Pyle. Maybe not even that, honestly. Try an Ernest T. Bass.
*The crowd (those who get the reference, anyway) hoots and hollers, as Lee Mayberry does his best to blend into the shadows*
J2: To try and help fix that problem, we re-signed Bobby Hurley, who isn't here right now because apparently some soon-to-be fired fool hasn't faxed him the contract info yet, thus making him an "unofficial" member of our team at the moment.
J2: Another point of emphasis coming into Free Agency was getting tougher in the post, another weakness of ours. It was not an easy thing to try and accomplish, as the PF/C market was slim this season. Most were out of our price range, even Stanley Roberts, who we also will miss. We were able to find value signings in Gheorghe Muresan and Sean Rooks, but our biggest offseason acquisition was the return of Lorenzo Williams.
*The team cheered and patted Lorenzo on the back as he flexed and yelled, "Holla if ya hear me!"*
J2 (visibly irritated): It became apparent by watching his performance with Atlanta that we had made a mistake by trading him. So when the opportunity arose to sign him, even with our limited funds, we took it.
J2: As for our starting five, we know for sure that Causwell, Wesley, and Anderson will be starting. That's a no-brainer. But, we are currently trying to decide who we want as our 6th Man, and that influences the rest of the starting five. We prefer our 6th Man to be able to play two positions, so that narrows it down to Aaron McKie...and Robert Horry.
*Horry's jaw drops and his shades slide off his face*
J2 (smirking): That's right, Rob. We're thinking about making you the captain of the..."B Team," I believe you said? The idea behind this is that Horry will cover the ballhandling duties, being the focal point and anchor for our 2nd unit, something we really need.
J2: Are there any questions at this time?

*Horry begins to speak, but J2 slides over to him and whispers, "If you goof off now, I. Will. Kill. You."*
Horry: ...well, naturally I've felt like I deserved to be a bigger part of the offense for a while. Back in Milwaukee, I was seen as a key piece, and I loved that pressure. Here, I was always seen as a piece, and not a key piece...so another team showed them my worth for me! So no, I don't really feel any pressure, because I always thought I was deserving of it. And hell, I get paid either way, sooo......
