LA Time Sports / Lakers Reporter- Mike Lackey
After a 32-50 finish the Lakers had decided to part ways with it's former GM. Not until very recently has there been any indication where the Lakers would expand it's search for a new GM. The idea of hiring away a top executive from a championship level team seemed like the obvious, however, at the eleventh hour we now know who the knew GM of the Lakers will be. No, he is not coming from Boston or Golden State as rumored. He is coming from the IJBL league. Wignosy reached out to the Lakers ownership and things quickly developed. So, who's the new guy? Great question..
Here is his GM Bio-
Cchrisc773 is coming from the IJBL League where he has been the GM of the Memphis Grizzlies the last Six Seasons. He took over a total rebuild six seasons ago, and in the past three seasons has won (161) games. Prior to that he spent (2) years in Utah where he had a record of (97-67) to include a trip to the conference finals... In eight career seasons in the IJBL he has a career record of (346-310). Now, keep in mind he spent three seasons building the Grizzlies from the ground up to the Elite team they are today. The Grizzlies are one of the early favorites to take the league title this up coming season.
Ownership is starving for a winner again, this is Los Angeles and We're the Lakers. Five years without a title is too long for the City of Angels, and Ownership believes they hired the right guy to bring " Showtime" back to the city!
Lakers Ownership- Thank You all for coming out today.. Like Mike mentioned things definitely happened at the eleventh hour. We had already interviewed with a few other candidates and were looking to offer one. However, Wignosy came to ownership and spoke highly of Chris. So we thought at the least we would give him a call, and see what his interest level was on being a GM here. He came in for the interview and just blew us away. Look, we are not saying this will be a hire that will make us a Title Contender next year, it's gonna take time. We feel though we have the right man for the Job, and I think a guy who will make moves that will make our fans proud. So, with that said let me introduce your new GM.
Chris Lakers GM- Thanks for this amazing opportunity. When you grow up as a kid you think about some of the great franchises and only two really come to mind.. Boston and Los Angeles Lakers.. 92 and 93 was a great time here with the Lakers and those guys out East. Look, I am a fan of the game first, and I realize Boston is one up on us now and has been to four Finals to our two. Now, it's not just about Boston.. For our fans it always be.... I want to build a team the right way, and it make time as there are zero shortcuts to building a team that can sustain winning for a long period. I know the pressures I have and if I didn't think I could handle them, I would not have accepted the job.
Look, we have some nice pieces in place. I spoke to KG and I told him to get ready, boy am I excited having him on my side. It's important that KG develops and I told him this is his team, and he is gonna be a huge part of getting us back to a championship level. I know what it takes to build a team, this is not my first rodeo and hopefully it's my last. The last thing I ask the fans is trust in me and just be patient. Rome wasn't built overnight and neither will these Lakers.
Chris Lakers GM- I will take just a few questions.
Mike Lackey ( Lakers Reporter)- First welcome to LA... Now, what is it that you believe the Lakers really liked about you?
Lakers GM- Well, I know what I am walking into. This team is not very good right now. Look, if I can't be honest who will? I been through quite a few rebuilds in my Career... I know it's not always easy to stay patient when you get that win now itch.... You have to be smart though. I have seen quite a few GM's in my career take over a rebuild and try to win instantly only to fall short.... You have to know when to trade and when not too. That's probably the most important thing to know in a rebuilding situation.
Lakers GM- Just one more question guys. Sorry.
Clayton Hunter- ESPN LA- Do you think you can win with the current roster. Should we expect any trades this off-season.
Lakers GM- Hunter, I haven't even unpacked my office yet... So, trades are the furthest thing from my mind. The other question you asked look. I came to take over the Los Angeles Lakers not the roster for one season. The roster will be addressed when the time is right. I can't say this any other way. We are the Los Angeles Lakers. We don't stay down for long, and we won't!
Thank You!
