The time has come! This upcoming sim on Friday we will sim through the All Star Game weekend and both conferences will finally go at it with the best-of-the-best that they have. The reserves are in no particular order, but in the article I do mention in the breakdowns who I think will be the primary backups and who will be wildcards. Let's get to it! Enjoy.
East
C: Alonzo Mourning
PF: Tom Gugliotta
SF: Glen Rice
SG: Steve Smith
PG: Gary Payton
Reserves: Eddie Jones, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Jason Kidd, Antonio McDyess, Robert Horry, Juwan Howard, & Jim Jackson
Breakdown: Figuring out the starters for the East was the easy part. Each of the starters have a strong case as to why they will be starting over their respected backups, but I will say Eddie Jones could potentially make a late push for the starting SG position. Alonzo Mourning continues to dominate the East due to the lack of competition at the C spot with only Zydrunas (the other Big Z) as the lone elite competitor. Tom Gugliotta was another unanimous decision and it was really hard to find another plaer listed as a PF to back him up, so the backup spot gets rewarded to Juwan Howard who is having a decent season. There is truly a lack of listed bigs in this conference, but that may be because players like Antonio McDyess and Robert Horry playing as SF for their teams.
Moving on to the SF positon, Glen Rice easily has this spot locked up thanks in part to the unfortunate injury to Anthony Peeler. Rice has shouldered the scoring load in his absence and will be rewarded. I’m taking a bit of a risk in thinking the CPU (aka Wig) will reward the two wildcard spots to SFs only, but because of the lack of bigs and injuries to previously mentioned Peeler and also Jalen Rose, I feel McDyess, Horry, and Jim Jackson could all potentially make the ASG roster for the East. Each are having very impressive seasons, especially McDyess who has made another leap in improvement in his stats
Finally, the PG position was a true battle of the Atlantic rivals. Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, and David Wesley all have a legit claim to make the roster, but I have David Wesley as the final cut from the team. He’s lost a step in his game no thanks to training camp and is shooting under 40% from the field, whereas Gary Payton continues to quietly be the best PG in the league (and a huge reason for the Heat’s success) with Jason Kidd behind him at a very close 2nd. Both are excellent on defense and can also crash the boards if needed (Kidd 19th in league in rebounds… WAT).
West
C: Shaquille O’Neal
PF: Shawn Kemp
SF: Stacey Augmon
SG: Latrell Spreewell
PG: Anfernee Hardaway
Reserves: Cedric Ceballos, Robert Pack, Chris Webber, Glen Robinson, Terry Mills, Allen Iverson, & Tim Duncan
Breakdown: Let’s start with the C position. Shaquille O’Neal is having a monstrous season averaging 30 points and 14 rebounds a game, not to mention 5 blocks a game. Ridiculous. Chris Webber is having a great season at the C spot for the Twolves, and if it wasn’t for Shaq we’d probably all be gushing over him right now. Shawn Kemp doesn’t even have to compete for this spot, it’s granted to him beginning of the season so no big surprise here. I think Terry Mills will be the primary backup PF the game chooses because he’s averaging a solid double-double. I also gave a wildcard spot to Tim Duncan at the PF position because he has a solid stat line of 18-8-2, but if Grant Hill hadn’t been hurt I think he would have been the primary backup over Mills and Duncan would be out.
I have Stacey as the starter at the SF position (BIAS MUCH NOLa.?) because he’s currently the league leading scorer, but Ceballos is right on his tail everywhere else and is given the backup SF spot. It’s close but that 9 point lead over Ceballos leads me to believe the CPU chooses Augmon as the starter. The second wildcard spot goes to Big Dawg Glen Rice who is having an incredible season during his contract year of course. Robinson could even be the primary backup SF with Ceballos as the wildcard but we’ll see.
To round this off, I think Spreewell has the SG spot locked down with Iverson as possibly the 2nd best SG in the West. After the Lakers sent Jones to the East I noticed the West was pretty weak at the SG spot and someone like even Tracy McGrady could sneak in, but Iverson is a more well-rounded player currently and has the assist numbers to back him up. Penny gets defined as a PG, much to the dismay of Darth, and it does get interesting with Robert Pack. I think Pack is having a statistically better season than Kevin Johnson because of points, assists, and steals. But Pack is a little hurt (currently D2D) and I’m not sure if you IR a player if that player can play in the ASG or not, plus he’s starting to miss a good chunk of games. If for whatever reason Pack cannot qualify, look for KJ or even Dee Brown from the Suns to sneak into this spot.
Prediction: 151-123 West, and if you think that margin is too high I invite you to check out last season’s meeting in the ASG.
