For the second season in a row, the owner of the Van Memphis Grizzlies, Gonzalo Lurdes is beginning the press conference at the podium. There is a door behind the podium, where everyone assumes the New GM of the Grizzlies will come from after his introduction. The team has kept their new GM away from the media since his hiring after the beginning of last season. The team has been allowing him to learn the ropes behind the scenes and gain familiarity with the league and it's GMs. As the attention turns back to Gonzalo, he seems noticeably less stern then the beginning of last season, after firing LoCo89
Gonzalo: Good Afternoon once again. Thankfully, you won't be seeing much of me today as we have plenty to get to. The team has just finished their final Training Camp practice late last night. We're very excited about the direction new head coach Stu Jackson is taking us and look forward to seeing our players develop with him. Speaking of new directions. After last summer's shall we say disastrous events, we were forced to fire GM LoCo89 and headed into the season without a GM. We found one a few weeks in and he began making moves immediately. We decided as a team, that it would be best to let him learn on his own, without the distraction of the media. However, today we are proud to introduce to you our new GM, Enrique Cortez and the Van Memphis Grizzlies.A noticeably younger man walks out from the doors followed in tow by members of the team, including HC Stu Jackson, Patrick Ewing, Hubert 'Hubie' Davis, Peja, Kurt Thomas, and Malik Sealy. They all take seats at the table, as Enrique walks to the podium. He takes a deep breathe then begins.Enrique: Good Afternoon everyone, glad you could join us. We finished up a little late last night, so excuse the delay. As we all know, last season did not go the way the team expected obviously. I was brought in a little later to right the ship a bit so to speak, however, we all know it will be a process that will take time to finish. However I do hope that the finished product is something that we all can be proud of.Enrique: Anyways last season the team ended with a losing record, but we did make some moves to clear up some cap room this season after having to pay the luxury tax for a 24 win team.Enrique: This off-season, without a draft pick we looked at free agency, and we set out to try to not commit our selves to long term expensive contracts. We instead tried to grab a few guys on cheaper deals however, all those that we targeted for those types of deals were paid much more then we were willing to spend. Therefore, we grabbed a couple of guys that we hope will help round off our roster in Shammgod and Brad Lohous. With the team set, we set off for training camp, for those results, I'll hand it off to new head coach, Stu Jackson.
Stu Jackson: Thank you We went into training camp not looking for much, but got some nice surprises. First of all, Patrick may have lost a step, but he did not nearly experience the drop we expected after last season. Hubert showed some great overall polish to his game, and finally Peja came in with what looks to be a much improved shooting stroke. We're excited to see what they look like going against other teams this Pre-Season. Enrique: Well... thats kinda it for us. Any questions for the players, Stu or myself will be taken at this time.

Sports Guy Bill Simmons, have any specific plans for the rebuild? Will it try to be a quick blow up get a top draft pick and sign some key FA's soon. Or more of a slow approach building the players you've got and acquiring assets along the way?

Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: As noted during your presser, you already have a young nucleus of Peja and Kurt Thomas to build around and the latest draft projections for this next upcoming draft have the Grizzlies projected to have a great chance at a top pick. Since trading away Daugherty and Gatling of once great Grizzly lore, do you think the new foundation has a chance to be as good and maybe greater than your teams of the past?

You've been fielding offers for Hubie for quite some time and usually GMs have a good idea what they are going to do with a player after training camp processes. What % do you put on Hubie being traded before the trade deadline this season?

Sterling Archer here from the SMPN, we all know about your charity work you've done with under privledged GMs and your crusade to eradicate shoulder arthritis due to intermittent shrugging. Do you.. Wait I didn't have a question. Just wanted to say that.

Or more of a slow approach building the players you've got and acquiring assets along the way? We've decided to go with a slower approach, but that is by virtue of our current situation. We know we have some cap space tied up long term, and we will have to let that fall off either naturally or via trade, but we don't see a trade happening for that tied up cap. We are more focused on cultivating young talent currently

Owners all over the league were raving about your innovations in the area of trade blocks... and yet it seems nothing came of those innovations. How do you keep your edge in innovating ahead of the rest of the league?

What % do you put on Hubie being traded before the trade deadline this season? I can't put a percentage on whether or not he'll be traded at all, let alone by the deadline. Hubie is a great player in this league and has shown that since coming to Van Memphis. We know what kind of player Hubie is, and thus far all the offers that we've had are GMs trying to "help us out" by sending us an expiring contract and taking on his longer deal or sending young, albeit pretty terrible talent. Davis's deal is one that doesnt hurt us, is great for his talent level, and if we can't find a trade that we feel benefits us, we have no qualms about keeping Hubert for the long term.

The off-season is a time to try new things and my new staff and I take pride in stepping away from the norm and our off-season trade blocks were spectacular However, sometimes it's just not the right time for a deal so nothing really came from them. We've had plenty of offers for teams to use up our cap space, but these are more down the line. In this league, any edge is fleeting, you just have to try to make a splash and hope something works

How has the search for a young frontcourt player to pair up with Kurt Thomas gone so far? Also, are you satisfied with how your two young guns, Stojakovic and Thomas, have progressed so far?

Jack Markson from the Golden Take. Last season, you made the highly controversial decision to trade productive Brad Daugherty for a behemoth contract in Patrick Ewing. While there's speculation that the move was made not primarily for basketball reasons, were you at all surprised or disappointed that you were not given a "trade-back" after the Hornets were given a re-do on their initial trade?
