Thank you all for coming this morning.
I'll start by recapping last season:
Last season was a tough one for the fans, as our biggest move was to trade away perennial fan favorite Larry Bird back to his hometown Indiana Pacers. We felt this was not as constructed a championship team, and we wanted to give Larry the chance to get a ring in the twilight of his career while also obtaining a draft pick to set ourselves up for the future. Overall, I think we played to expectations with Most-Improved Player Brian Shaw and 6th man extraordinaire Bernard King leading the way. We even caught a hot streak toward the end of the season that left us just shy of a playoff spot. We hope our fans will bear with us through this rebuilding plan, but we plan to compete for a championship in the very near term.
The off-season was a tough pill to swallow for this GM. With max contracts flying around like flies in The Karate Kid, I felt it was better to remain fiscally responsible. Unfortunately this resulted in the jettison of last year's core as Brian Shaw and Kevin Gamble chased max deals in a weak free-agent market. Losing Shaw was a bitter pill to swallow, but it will result in a better long-term outlook for this team and a golden age for Denver fans. In other words, it may not be this year, but we're going after "not one, not two, not three", etc.
This upcoming season will be a long one (well, about as long as any other season), but we expect great things out of Rookie Allan Houston and new Power Forward extraordinaire Derrick McKey who we're very happy to have here. We feel like we have a lot of complementary piece that we can build around long-term, and even though we don't have them locked up for future seasons, we hope that the beautiful city of Denver and the best fans in the NBA convince them to stick around as we move toward our championship era.
Any questions? I have Derrick and Allan here with me as well.
