GM Pauly P walks into the press conference alongside SG Harold EllisPaulyP: Welcome everyone here, I'm keeping this brief cause I am sure we all have crap to do today. We are not happy with a 2nd consecutive playoff exit in the 1st Round but we are rolling with the punches. We won 50 games last season and that is nothing to scoff at. During the draft we tried to see if we could sneak into the Top 10 and grab a young player but we were found wanting on pieces of value from the teams in those positions. We were able to get a good prospect late in the 1st Round in Harold Ellis, we are excited about him defensively. We also splurged a bit in FA and got a true PG in Dee Brown, he is young and fits very well with Stacey Augmon. Speaking of the "Plastic Man" he has improved once again and he should be even more amazing this season. And before any one of you asks me the most basic question ever, my expectations for our Pacers is a division title, conference title, and a chip. Nothing has changed. We want to win and expect to win. Point blank. End of story. Anything to add fellas? Harold Ellis: Hey y'all I'm Harold, I'm only here cause the vets didnt wanna be here and I'm their little bitch this year as the rook. Pauly: Harold...you cant curse during a presser. I'm gonna have to fine you. Harold Ellis: ....fuck.... -the camera pans to Harold Ellis' agent in the front row as he storms out knowing his client doesnt make much money to begin with-
Pauly: Sorry about that, any questions from the media?

Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: what do you think if the moves that were made by some of the other teams inside our division. Do you think the entire division is tougher outside of Milwaukee?

I think the Central has some very savvy GM's and that is definitely reflected in the moves that have been made this offseason. Soundwave has poached Magic from the Magic, Wig spent some cash in FA, Tray got LJ and his title winning experience, the top side of the division is much stronger. Not sure about the Bulls, Cavs, or Hornets right now. Cavs and Bulls have the starpower but not much depth behind their coreguys. If the Hornets can get their gameplan correct then I can see them sneaking into the playoffs as an 8-seed. Is the whole division tougher? No. I dont think so. Doesnt mean it wont be difficult especially at the very top.

Tim Cowlishaw, Great Dallas Morning News. So I noticed you used the word "poached" in reference to the Raptors acquiring Mr. HIV. How do you feel about the top of this division? Pistons take the division again? Do you think you can sneak up there and be a dark horse?
We all know you know what it takes to compete and be consistent. What are you missing that will make you feel really confident about being a true contender?

In what ways do you think acquiring Dee Brown will help your offense get to the next level? Last season you made a big splash in making a move for Larry bird, that didn't work out as planned. Has that made you more or less hesitant to make another big move?

What are you missing that will make you feel really confident about being a true contender? The Pistons are most certainly the top dawg entering this year, they earned that much last season. I feel the top of the division will be a 4-horse race between the Raptors, Hawks, Pistons and ourselves. As always we will be the dark horse. No one is going to pick us to win anything and then by the end of the year we'll have around 50 wins. That's something we're comfortable with, we dont get cocky after a few good sims and we dont inflate our egos with some good press. That's just not our nature. We work hard to deserve the plaudits coming our way. Our biggest weakness at this point is probably going to be team defense. We have a few outstanding defenders but as a whole we arent where we would like to be, we're also going to try to share the ball more this year, we've been very ISO heavy in the past, usually finishing in the bottom of the assists category. I think that offense really hurt us the last couple years in the playoffs since our key players we're being locked onto and we didnt adjust to a more passing system.

Has that made you more or less hesitant to make another big move? Well I dont view the Larry Bird trade as a failure. We knew it was a risk to get someone a bit older but we have the opinion that its never a mistake to recruit talent. Unlike another team that acquired a superstar veteran for last seasons playoff race and immediately traded them away this offseason, we're going to run with Larry a bit in an established 6th man role. We dont need him to carry the team, we want him to shoot lights out and stretch the floor. If a big move presents itself we wont be shy from making it. As for Dee he excites us very much. This is the best team he's been on talent wise and we're giving him the keys to orchestrate us. Like I mentioned in an earlier question to Tim Cowlishaw, we were very ISO heavy, Dee has a good jumpshot and he's gonna help spread the floor and open up the driving lanes for Stacey.

Do you intend to use Bird in more of a "point forward" role off the bench with his passing ability to get the offense moving during those times it stagnates?

Perhaps, Larry will be used exclusively at the 4 slot this year due to his declining quickness. We dont want him on the perimeter on defense. He will share the facilitating duties with emerging PG Doug Overton in the 2nd unit. Both guys can shoot it and both can handle it so we are very happy with the way our 2nd group is shaping up.

Are you going to be looking to upgrade your point guard position over the course of the season if the right deal comes available to you?

Are you going to be looking to upgrade your point guard position over the course of the season if the right deal comes available to you? Dee Brown is our starter and we dont see him losing that spot. However it is never a mistake to recruit talent and if ANY player became available that we liked and could afford you can bet we'll find a place for him on our team
