Eastern Conference Playoff Races
First Seed –
Atlanta Hawks (61-17; 4 to play) – Clinched
@nets, Celtics, @knicks, Knicks
Second Seed -
New York Knicks (52-25; 5 to play)
@sonics, @mavericks, Magic, Hawks, @hawks
Third Seed -
Indiana Pacers (51-26; 5 to play)
@heat, @magic, @t’Wolves, Nuggets, @nuggets
New Jersey Nets (46-31; 5 to play) - 5 GB
Hawks, @76ers, @mavericks, Bucks, @bucks
Pick for 3rd – Indiana Pacers – There is pretty much no way that the Nets can earn the three seed because the Pacers would need to lose all 5 of their remaining games and they play the Heat and T’Wolves.
Fourth Seed -
New Jersey Nets (46-31; 5 to play)
Hawks, @76ers, @mavericks, Bucks, @bucks
Orlando Magic (43-34; 5 to play) 3 GB
@trailblazers, Pacers, @knicks, Hornets, Cavs
Pick for 4th – New Jersey Nets – The Nets need the Magic to lose twice since their schedule seems a little more brutal than the Magic. However, the Magic are 6-7 against the remainder of their schedule this year. To expect them to win out is a long shot. There is a chance I could be wrong here, but I don’t think so. The Nets also play the Wilkins-less Bucks.
Fifth Seed -
Orlando Magic (43-34; 5 to play)
@trailblazers, Pacers, @knicks, Hornets, Cavs
Milwaukee Bucks (38-39; 5 to play) - 5 GB
@wizards, Wizards, Pistons, @nets, Nets
Pick for 5th – Orlando Magic – To expect the Bucks to win out without Wilkins and then get help from the Magic by losing all of their remaining games is foolish. If it happens though, Bucks own the series 3-1. It would be an epic collapse for sure.
Sixth, Seventh, Eighth Seed -
Milwaukee Bucks (38-39; 5 to play)
@wizards, Wizards, Pistons, @nets, Nets
Cleveland Cavaliers (36-41; 5 to play) - 2 GB
Pistons, @grizzles, @pistons, @lakers, @magic
Chicago Bulls (35-42; 5 to play) - 3 GB
@warriors, Heat, @heat, @76ers, Lakers
Toronto Raptors (35-43; 4 to play) – 3.5 GB
T’Wolves, Celtics, @spurs, Rockets
Philadelphia 76ers (35-43; 4 to play) – 3.5 GB
Nets, @sonics, Bulls, Mavericks
New Orleans Hornets (33-43; 6 to play) – 4.5 GB
Nuggets, @nuggets, @trailblazers, TrailBlazers, @magic, @pistons
Detroit Pistons (31-45; 6 to play) – 6.5 GB
@cavs, Mavericks, @bucks, Cavs, @jazz, Hornets
Pick for 6th – Bucks - The Bucks own the tiebreaker against the Cavs and the Bulls and play one of the worst team in basketball twice. Sure it is without Wilkins, but I think they’ll be able to pick up those wins and the Cavs and the Bulls each play the Lakers. Worst case scenario is that they slip to 7, but I don’t see it happening.
Pick for 7th – Cavaliers – This is mainly based on what I see happening in the 8th seed, but the Cavaliers have to fend off the Bulls and I think they will. Just a call here, but the Cavs have also been the hotter team between the two lately.
Pick for 8th – Raptors – Toronto owns the tiebreaker with the Bulls on a 3-1 series lead and has an unbelievably easy road into the playoffs with 4 games against teams currently slotted outside of the playoffs. Three of them are in ‘America’s Hat.’
The Bulls can't win out to prevent being jumped.
Let me know how you see the standings shaking out in the Eastern Conference
