Mind you, this is an excerpt from the Charlotte Hornets media guide from 1991-92. This is how I see the Central shaking out.
I think the division that we are in is by at the toughest and most competitive division in the entire NBA. I think even the last place team in this division could finish maybe a game or 2 under .500. With that said, I'll put them in tiers.
Top 2 teams...
Atlanta - defending NBA champ and while veteran status, as long as Magic is playing at a top rate even at his age, I still think they are one of the top teams of the division. You have to play your best and to beat them for sure.
Milwaukee - while I think Atlanta will be up there again, I think this team will win the division this year. Dominique is the figurehead of the Bucks and still dominant but I'd love to get my hands on Kevin Willis or Dell Curry. It was a sly move to pry Byron Scott away from Washington. I think Scott will have a much easier time running the second unit. The bucks are a real scary team that I think wins the division.
Middle tier 3-6.
I think any team could be a 4-8 seed in the East to be honest.
3. Cleveland - If I was starting a team from scratch and I had a top 5 pick, the best player in this division is Charles Barkley. I think for his size and shooting and ability, this is a team that I think lives and dies with him. His impact on the court is second to none and he's so dangerous that you want to give him the ball down the stretch and just let him go to work. I think it was a steal of a trade the Cavs pulled off to get Avery Johnson for Scotty Brooks. Nothing against Brooks but Avery will tell at his teammates to be in spots and be a Napoleon out there. I think this team has a lot of potential but if Barkley goes down, they may be a lottery team.
4. Me - I think my squad while it may not have the top talents of a Milwaukee and Atlanta, I think my team is the best all around team that can have a productive player at any position and impose defensively. This team with allte change I think will have the biggest impact of the division and eastern conference.
5. Indianapolis - I don't think they did much in the offseason and maybe they didn't need to. Like Cleveland, their team runs through Patrick Ewing. He is a beast in the paint and can draw a double team of help anytime he touches the ball. I think AC Green is a player that goes unnoticed a lot of the time and I think Jud Buechler will fit in better and maybe develop a tougher skin than he did in Charlotte.
6. Chicago - I think the bold move to get Seikly in the offseason will play off. I like Alvin Robertsonnand Johnny Newman. I think this team will surprise a lot of people this season. Maybe have a battle with Detroit and Toronto for the 8th seed.
The rest 7 & 8.
7. Toronto. Will Isiah really impact them that much. I think they will be a tough and scrappy team again and maybe the acquisition of Thomas will put them over the top this year but who knows.
8. Detroit. I think they will be tough to play against in Detroit but idk. I think they will be a lottery team.
