Player Preview #1 - Tim DuncanTim Duncan is not the most talented player in this draft. However, he is the best player in it, and he will be a successful NBA player, both because of his style of play. For Duncan, it is simple: he plays. He plays hard every minute, with confidence and emotion, at both ends of the floor, and he plays to win. He has a winning attitude that will greatly help the team that drafts him, going beyond what he will do that shows up in the box score. Duncan is the type of player who can lift his team with his play, as he can take over games at either end of the floor, and is the consummate team player. He can dominate defensively, as he is an excellent shot-blocker and rebounder. At the offensive end, he is constantly adding to his game, as he has expanded his shooting rangewith time. When double-teamed, he will pass the ball back out to an open teammate; he involves his teammates as though he were a point guard, as he realizes that he alone will not win ball games. Duncan will be a franchise player because he makes his teammates better, in addition to being a great individual talent. He averaged a double-double in each of his last two seasons in college, in scoring and rebounding. If Tim Duncan is not the first pick in the draft, the GM doing the selecting will be referred to the best psychologist within a fifty-mile radius. This holds even if the team selecting first is set at center, as Duncan can play power forward as well.

Player Preview #2 - Tracy McGradyAnother high school player with tremendous physical ability but not much of a clue about how to really play the game of basketball. McGrady likes to compare himself to Penny Hardaway. I can see that a little bit, but Penny played PG as he grew up -- it's not clear that McGrady played organized basketball. McGrady is an amazingly gifted athlete. He moves gracefully, has very good quickness, and jumps very well. He has a smooth shot that appears fundamentally sound. He is athletic around the hoop, able to contort his body to get looks at the basket in heavy traffic. Offensively, he has great potential with his shooting. He could be a tremendous offensive rebounder. However, he doesn't move without the ball. Period. Perhaps that's a fault of his high school coaching. It's a big weakness in his game. Defensively, he again has great potential. He does a decent job on defense when he tries, but nothing exceptional, except shot blocking. McGrady has a lot of work to do on the defensive end of the court. He doesn't box out very much, either. Ballhandling is above average for a high school senior his size. Nothing remarkable, though. McGrady is certainly an intriguing player for a NBA team to draft. He has great potential, but has really only had one year of great play in high school to base a decision on. He could become a great 2 or 3 in the league. Most any team would have to wait a minimum of a year, perhaps two, before getting any feedback.

Player Preview #3 - Chauncey BillupsBillups is probably the best pure guard in the draft. He has a little more size than Knight or Vaughn, which is a big factor. Also, he is a excellent shooter and passer. He also is like Knight in the sense that he can lead his team in the big games, like agains North Carolina in the NCAA Tourney. One of his only weaknesses is that he is a little overeager, which can lead to turnovers or bad shots. But in my opinion,he is the best guard in the draft. Period.

Player Preview #4 - Keith Van HornKeith Van Horn has great size to be an NBA small forward (6'9", 230 lbs.) and the rebounding and shot blocking skills to give some time at the 4 spot. Many have drawn comparisons to Larry Bird. I don't feel he's as talented as Bird was but he definitely has the potential. His all around game would be a valuable asset to any team. He has proven in his four years at Utah that he is a great leader by taking them to the NCAA' tournament four times. I feel that if Tim Duncan were not in this draft that he would be the first one selected and even though Duncan is don't look for him to go any lower than 2 or 3..

Player Preview #5 - God ShammgodThere hasn't been a more controversial student-athlete at Providence College than God Shammgod, perhaps since Marvin Barnes. From his name to his game, debate has raged among fans and the media alike. Some say he is the best PC point guard since the legendary Ernie DiGregorio, others feel he is just a showboat. The facts are that he is an immensely talented player, possessing great speed, ball handling and passing skills, and the ability to lead a team. He is also, however, just a sophomore. Not Isiah Thomas as a sophomore, or Magic Johnson as a sophomore, or even Allen Iverson as a sophomore. Shammgod's great performance in the NCAA Tournament showed the potential he has. But, his shortcomings also showed, and none more glaring than his missed twelve-foot jumper that would have sent the Friars to the Final Four. Although he is a marvelous passer and ball handler, offensively, Sham's game is not up to NBA caliber. He still takes the ball inside and leaves his feet too quickly. Against most college teams he can bail himself out of that jam. In the NBA, he will rack up the turnovers. Defensively, he can handle most guards his size, but the better and bigger point guards will give him a tough time if they post him up. In short, he would have been better off with another year at PC. Sham has a shot as a first round pick, depending on the peculiarities of the draft, but is more likely a 2nd round choice. He will have to be in the right situation to make an NBA team. WOW SOUNDS LIKE A TOP 5 PLAYER TO ME!!!
