Going with my theme for the year of making up teams, I am going to do an all conference showdown of the best players not to make the playoffs this year. Much like my last write up, I am going to be pulling the best player at each position with a back up for each position. After that, I am going to imagine that the two conferences will face each other in a best of 7 series.
East:
C- Vlade Divac
PF – Brian Grant
SF – Steve Smith
SG – Mario Elie
PG – Muggsy Bogues
6 – Terrell Brandon (PG)
7 – Brent Barry (SG)
8 – Chris Mullin (SF)
9 – Juwon Howard (PF)
10 – Jayson Williams (C)
Vlade is the best all around center in this conference. He has a good balance of offense and defense. Jayson Williams is the next best center in the East. He has a great balance of offense and defense with the ability to rebound on either end of the court. Brian Grant, although still young, has incredible rebounding ability. Match that ability with his decent defense and offense makes him the top pick for PF. The PF position in the East is young. I chose Howard to be the backup because he has the ability to score that other players don’t necessarily have. He also is on the rise for his defense and rebounding as opposed to ‘Nique who is on his way out of the league. SF is easily the most stacked position in the East. Steve Smith was the easy choice for his all around dominance offensively. We are going for all points all the time from this position by spelling Smith with Chris Mullin, another outstanding scorer for this position. For SG, I chose some veteran leadership with Mario Elie. He has good shooting and three point scoring, and he has an advantage on defense to his Detroit teammate Allan Houston. For a backup, I chose Brent Barry for his all around skill. He has the ability to score on offense and can play some good defense on the other side of the court. Bogues gets the nod for PG due to his ability to create for other and shut down opposing PG. Terrell Brandon is going to backup Muggsy and the team won’t see a drop off from that position at all.
West
C – Brad Dougherty
PF – Karl Malone
SF – Glen Robinson
SG – Hubert Davis
PG – Greg Anthony
6 – Mark Price (PG)
7 – Drazen Petrovic (SG)
8 – Willie Anderson (SF)
9 – Chris Gatling (PF)
10 – Dale Davis (C)
Dougherty is the elite offensive Center in the West. He also has good rebounding and defense, but he does have a slight deficiency at rim protection. To counter his play, we bring Dale Davis off the bench. Nowhere near as good on offense, but the defense and rebounding makes him a great backup for a player like Chris. Although Malone dropped off a little from previous seasons, he is still a beast at PF. Most teams in the NBA would want him holding down that position. For backup, Chris Gatling is our guy. He brings an intensity to the floor with powerful defense and aggressive rebounding. For SF we are going with Glen “Mad Dog” Robinson, who has the ability to score from both inside or outside. To back him up, we wanted a shut down defender to battle with the elite scoring in the east. Unfortunately the West does not have that player at this position, so we went with the next best player and chose Willie Anderson. Hubie Davis is the top shooting guard for the West with a great shot from anywhere on the court. To share the position with him, we chose Drazen Petrovic. A good scorer and a decent enough defender is what Petrovic brings to a team. Greg Anthony is going to be the floor general for this team with a good amount of ball handling and defensive ability. To backup Anthony is Mark Price who brings the ability to score to go along with his distribution and defense.
Advantage:
C - West
PF - West
SF - East
SG - East
PG - East
Bench - Push
Winner:
West in 7.
This decision was a hard one to pick. The west has the dominance inside, while the east has the dominance outside. Although the West will not be able to control the SF position, the rebounding and inside game will take it home for the West.
