Howdy ho neighbors!!
Who's ready for some predictions and oddsmaking!? So let's get down to it. With the season being three quarters of the way done, predicting the division winners won't be very difficult. So that's why I'll also predict the seedings and give each playoff team their odds of winning it all. So here we go!
Eastern Conference
Atlantic winner - Celtics
Although D-rob and the Knicks are always formidable, this isn't even a race. The Celtics are on a 26 game win streak and who knows when that will get broken. Celtics win this division again and with ease...again.
Central winner - Raptors
This division will come down to the Raps and the Pacers. These teams have been really evenly matched all year long. Two reasons I give the nod to the Raptors. Schedule and history. The Raptors have a home heavy schedule left as the Pacers have the opposite. And as history has shown the Pacers tend to always fade towards the end of the season and playoff time. But let's give Pauly some credit, he's had some big injuries and he's right there in the race. Raptors won't win the division by more than 3 games.
Eastern Conference Playoff Seedings
1. Celtics 2:1 odds
2. Raptors 50:1 odds
3. Knicks 10:1 odds
4. Pacers 70:1 odds
5. Heat 75:1 odds
6. Wizards 80:1 odds
7. Hornets 90:1 odds
8. Bucks 100:1 odds
Seeding Breakdown
I feel confident about 1-4, 5-8 could be a number of possibilities. But looking at remaining schedules and current injuries, I do see the magic tumbling out of the playoffs. No Rodman, no Benoit... Therefore no rebounding, no defense...no playoffs. I think the Bucks barely make it in, and are rewarded with the Celtics.
Odds Breakdown
So here's my explanation of the odds to "win it all" I've placed on my predicted playoff teams. There are two teams in the East. They just happen to be in same division. The rest of the teams in the East are simply trying to keep up. To win it all you must get out your conference, and to be fair that's nearly impossible unless your the Celtics. Maybe a handful of these teams could actually win a 7 game series in the Finals. But they can't against the Celtics. Please prove me wrong, I pray that someone does.
In the first round, Celts kill the Bucks. I could see either Pacers or Heat winning that series, only to then get killed by the Celts in the second round. Knicks easily defeat the Wizards. I think Raptors would beat the Hornets in a close series. Even though Raptors would have home court against the Knicks, I'd still take Robinson. BOTTOM LINE IS EVERY TEAM ENDS UP IN BOSTON. GAME OVER.
Western Conference
Midwest winner - Dallas Mavericks
Dallas only wins because the T-Wolves don't have enough time to catch up. They're 10.5 back as of now, and I think they gain more games every SIM. Luckily the Mavs have enough of a lead to onto division.
Pacific winner - Golden State Warriors
Just call these guys the "regular season champions". No-one has been more consistent during the regular season than this team thanks to Shawn Kemp. They normally have at least one other team on their tails, but not this year. This division race is over.
Western Conference Playoff Seedings
1. Warriors 6:1 odds
2. Mavericks 15:1 odds
3. Timberwolves 10:1 odds
4. Clippers 30:1 odds
5. Lakers 22:1 odds
6. Supersonics 80:1 odds
7. Rockets 80:1 odds
8. Blazers 70:1 odds
Seeding Breakdown
I think the 1 and 2 seed are locked in as of now. The rest are honestly a crapshoot. I think the Wolves will certainly take the 3 seed as they are surging since adding MJ. I would put the Lakers next but history shows they tend to rest their guys towards the end of the year and typically drop a few games they normally wouldn't. Blazers have a tough schedule left and have a few nagging injuries, I pick them to fall to #8.
Odds Breakdown
Let me start by saying that every team in the west bracket is solid. There only one first round upset I'd be shocked about and that's if Seattle knocked off the Wolves. And not because the Sonics aren't good, only because in my scenario they were unlucky to get the Wolves in the first round. Sonics would have to get thru the Wolves, Mavs, and then probably the Warriors all on the road. Same with the Rockets. Just isn't going to happen. Hence the 80:1 for those guys. Despite the Warriors lack of success in the playoffs, they have to be the slight favorite to come out of the West. They have home court all the way through and they still have tons of playoff experience that a team like the Wolves may lack a bit of.
Now despite the Wolves very possibly only having home court for round 1, they may not need it. I can see this team beating the Mavs and Warriors in 7 game series and wouldn't be shocked at all. This team hit the ground running and appears to be pretty dominant. The talent is there for sure, but it will be all on the coach's shoulders come playoff time. The Mavs having home court thru the first two rounds will help them tremendously, and assuming they get the Warriors in the conference finals we know that series could go either way.
Lakers are as they have been for a few seasons now, the dark horses. This team is ALWAYS better than their playoff seed advertises. And we all know what the coach can do in the gameplanning department. But if the Clippers beat the Lakers and then beat the Warriors in round two, I also wouldn't be shocked. Bottom line is the west is stacked with good teams, and be prepared for upsets on the western side of the bracket this year.
And that's a wrap! Hope you enjoyed my rambling and feel free to comment below if you agree! If you disagree...well I don't give a shit! :-)
