Hey everyone! Welcome to "Whose Award is it Anyway?" The post where everything's made up and the points don't matter. In fact, there are no points! I'm going to give out some awards for the half-season (Some will be real, some for the lulz). You might be asking, "Who give's a shit what you think? You're the owner of the Nuggets, the worst team in the League who can't even tank properly!" To you, I say, YOU WIN (The not giving a shit what I think award)...and we're off.
MVP - Shawn "OG, OP" Kemp - More points, more boards, fewer minutes, better percentages, this is really a no-brainer. Apologies to: David Robinson.
ROY - Joe "Syndicate is a Homer" Smith -
Before you shout that I'm a homer (okay, I already did that in the nickname) let me say that this is an EXTREMELY close choice that led me to some advanced metrics (not that advanced) to figure this one out. Smith brings in 17.1ppg/7.1rpg/1.3apg in 32.4mpg without even mentioning blocks. This doesn't look like as juicy of a stat line as Michael Finley (20.7/4.8/3.8) or the StackAttack (20.4/4.6/3.8), but it comes in almost 4 fewer mpg. If we compare per-minute stats of the three isn't it closer than we thought? Which player would you rather have?
Player A: .57ppm/.13rpm/.10apm
Player B: .57ppm/.13rpm/.11apm
Player C: .53ppm/.22rpm/.04apm
Player A is Finley, B Stack, C Smith. Per minute, they are REALLY close esp with blocks considered.
When I looked at Efficiency, the picture became clearer.
Player Off Team Off Difference Player Def Team Def Difference
Finley 104.8 103.6 +1.2 108.5 107.2 -1.3
Stack 110.6 109.0 +1.6 102.6 101.5 -1.1
Smith 96.5 93.1 +3.4 106.0 107.8 +1.8
Smith makes his team MOST better on Offense and is the only one of the three to make his team better on defense. For all of you in the Finley camp, the woeful Bucks are actually WORSE per 100 possessions with him on the court. Maybe if they pulled some of his minutes back, they'd win some more games Obvious apologies to: Jerry Stackhouse (my number 2) and Michael Finley
Predictor of the Year - Nick "2nd Nicest GM" Malone - Does anyone look at these after they are made? Well I do! A bunch of people tied with getting 3/4 Division Leaders, but Nick was the only one to correctly tab the Raptors as Central leaders. Also, while he missed the Midwest conference (Picking the Rockets over the Mavs) he has the Mavs as Western Conference Champions, so I'll give him the nod. Apologies to: Loco. The T-Wolves really are almost winning every division. That was pretty based.
Underrated Trade of the Year - Hornets/Knicks on July 16 - Hornets send: Dino Radja & Mitchell Butler
/Knicks send: Rex Walters, 1996 Knicks first, and 4 points.
I love this trade for both teams. Hornets needed a starting SG that could play more minutes than Butler can give at this stage in his career, Knicks could BADLY use some long-term assets and a back-up PF. Both teams got what they were looking for and traded from depth with the Hornets getting a few points for their trouble. I think the Knicks get an A and the Hornets a B+ in this very fair trade.
GMOY - KuCoach (Blazers) - KuCoach has not been the splashiest GM, that's for sure, (he's made exactly 0 trades this season). But he built a core of good, young players. Effectively targeted weaknesses in FA (badly needed a scoring 2-guard and bid on/won Mark Macon who is scoring not in BIG numbers but SUPER efficiently (TS% of .613). And without an OP player, he finds himself battling for the 3rd spot in the West. Apologies to: Darth (Absolutely committed trape twice), Pauly (Grabbed Rony from a desperate GM for peanuts), J2 (for slowly improving his team without sacrificing cap flexibility), and Nola. BEST TANK3R 3V3R.
5 Coors Lite® Bold Predictions:
1. Pistons make the playoffs - Been back and forth on this one, but I think Tray parlays figuring out his team and a weak 2nd half schedule into the 8 seed in the East.
2. 'Zo resigns with the Celtics on 4yr max deal - Though it'll take him going to Salary-Cap Buzz Lightyear status (Infinity and Beyond), Conroy is gonna have to pay up to keep this guy to try to elongate his window.
3. Inner's head explodes during draft lotto - The Suns own two picks projected to go in the top 5, but one of them is top 3 protected. More than any team, this lotto could make or absolutely break the spirit of the Suns' owner. The pressure gets to him, and his head explodes before the selections are even announced.
4. The Bucks will tank again! - Not that they were tanking before - wink, wink, nudge nudge.
5. The Spurs win the Midwest in 1996 - All that young talent a year more developed, and no injuries, they'll win a lot of games. I think this is the beginning of a dynasty.
Thanks for playing!
