The second half of the season is here, and it does seem like some rookies are separating from the pack, I could still see a few guys taking the award home. Right now I'd say Stack and Finley are 1 and 1A, but Joe Smith is coming on strong scoring and rebounding well. There has been some movement in the rankings and another elimination.
1. Jerry Stackhouse - Los Angeles Lakers (34-18) - 20.4 ppg / 4.6 rpg / 3.8 apg
Stack jumps into the #1 spot after having increased his ppg and rpg, and only saw his apg drop by a tenth. He started over Finley in the Rookie-Sophomore game, and has ahigher PER, a higher TS% ah screw it he's basically a more efficient scorer than Finley.
2. Michael Finley - Milwaukee Bucks (25-28) - 20.7 ppg / 4.8 rpg / 3.8 apg
Finley did the opposite and dropped in every category that's listed above. None were major drops, but have to wonder if he got off to a fast start and has finally hit that rookie wall. The Bucks might make a strong push to make the playoffs this second half of the season, and Finley is going to have to get back to his hot start to get them there.
3. Joe Smith - Denver Nuggets (12-40) - 17.1 ppg / 7.1 rpg / 1.1 bpg
Smith while seeming to have some huge games has only increased his ppg and rpg by 0.1 and actually saw a drop of 0.1 in his bpg. He did start at PF during the Rookie-Sophomore game and is still in the picture because of his high scoring and rebounding averages, but will need a strong second half to grab the award. If you're gonna have similar numbers than the guys ahead of you, ya gotta at least be helping your team win games to move up.
4. Kevin Garnett - Cleveland Cavaliers (8-43) - 16.6 ppg / 6.2 rpg / 2.2 apg
Garnett is having a solid season, but I'm not sure if SF is the position for him. He's got all the intagibles to play the position, but may be better suited as a 4. Either way the youngster may have to go through some growing pains before he starts to dominate. Also see last sentence in Joe Smith's recap.
5. Arvydas Sabonis - Dallas Mavericks (41-11) - 13.1 ppg / 8.6 rpg / 54% FG
The reigning Rookie of the Month for the West and starting Center for the rookie team, Arvydas is now the leading rebounder and has the highest FG% of rookies. He also is dishing out an impressive 3.8 apg. Scoring may not drive these awards like I used to think so Sabonis could be the dark horse for this award. He's jumped a couple spots already I could see him jumping KG if the current trends continue.
6. Rasheed Wallace - San Antonio Spurs (18-33) - 14.9 ppg / 7.6 rpg / 49% FG
Sheed has finally dropped below 50% from the field for the first time in these rankings, he's upped his scoring and rebounding slightly, but the Spurs have just been decimated by injuries this year. I'm still holding out hope that Sheed can win the award, but the crowd in my bandwagon seems to be dwindling.
7. Brent Barry - Chicago Bulls (10-40) - 16.6 ppg / 4.2 rpg / 1.1 spg
Barry is firmly on elimination watch, he's having a good season all things considered, but has the lowest FG% of anyone left on the list. There are just too many guys ahead of him that are doing more. He's going to have to pull of a minor miracle to make it to the top half of this list.
Damon Stoudamire - It's time to say goodbye at any hope of being the ROY Damon. This is my least favorite part of updating these rookies. But the FG% is atrocious, he barely has more apg than Sabonis, and the team just isn't winning. I don't think all is lost for the rookie PG, but for now he has been eliminated from consideration for ROY.
Antonio McDyess
